Zao Liza is a highly recommended ski resort in the Yamagata area. Known for its tranquility, it is less crowded than other slopes making it an enjoyable space for visitors. The resort ensures well-managed slopes and well-maintained infrastructure, which adds to its appeal. Its location near the ski area, 藏王坊平高原, is just a brief ten-minute walk from the rental and ticketing place. Though it may not have as many ski lanes as the Zao Hot Spring area, Zao Liza is praised for being a suitable choice for beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
The resort is not just renowned for its skiing facilities but also for its delicious pizza, prepared in a wood fire oven. Despite the lodge's canteen-style seating and uncozy ambiance, visitors still find comfort due to the large space it offers. However, those who don't ski might not find the main building as appealing.
Visitors have also appreciated the resort's efficient and courteous staff at the parking lot, lift, and rest house. The resort seems to be lacking in terms of gluten-free options, but guests are allowed to bring their own food.
Zao Liza also facilitates snow trekking with rentable equipment. Hikers aiming for an ice tree tour can simply take a lift to the top. The views from the resort are stunning, with beautiful frost-covered trees making up an impressive scenery.
The resort could, however, improve on certain aspects. For instance, some visitors have noted the absence of an air gun for cleaning snow from snowshoes after descending. Also, the kids' space appears to be missed during busy periods.
Overall, Zao Liza is a great place for skiing and mountain climbing, offering long runs, a fair steepness, and a remarkable view. The resort manages to maintain a balance between outdoor adventure and indoor comfort, making it a must-visit destination.
