Hey families! If you’ve been following the Utah ski scene for a while, you might remember that for a long stretch—pretty much the entire 2010s—Solitude Mountain Resort was a bit quiet on the terrain park front. As a parent, I know that while we love the steeps and groomers, the kids are always asking, "Where are the jumps?"
Well, things have been changing for the better. Back in the 2022-23 season, Solitude finally brought the parks back, hiring a dedicated team to build out features on trails like Easy Street and Main Street. But this week, they are adding something that makes my "mountain mom" heart sing: a dedicated handle tow lift.
Why We Love Handle Tows
If you've ever tried to teach a 7-year-old how to use a traditional rope tow, you know the struggle. It can be tough on their little arms, and I can't tell you how many pairs of mittens we've shredded on rough ropes over the years.
The new lift, dubbed the "Soli Parks Tow," is a handle tow. This is a game-changer because instead of squeezing a rope for dear life, riders grab a handle that gently pulls them up the hill. It’s so much more accessible for younger riders and beginners building their confidence in the park. It allows them to get tons of laps in without the exhaustion of hiking back up or the intimidation of a high-speed chairlift line.
A Sustainable Move
I love a good budget-friendly, sustainable solution. This lift is actually a "hand-me-down" from Mammoth Mountain (which, by the way, holds a solid 73.1/100 on ShredIndex). It was previously used for ski racing there, and now it’s finding a new life helping Utah kids master their rail slides.
The new tow is scheduled to open on January 31st at 10 a.m. local time. While Solitude's park setup might not be as massive as the ones you'd find at Park City, it's perfect for families who want a more relaxed vibe.
Planning a Visit?
If you are heading to Big Cottonwood Canyon to check out the new setup, you're in for a treat. The canyon is home to both Solitude and Brighton, making it a fantastic destination for a family trip. If you need a place to crash near the action, you can book your stay close to the slopes to beat the morning traffic.
See you on the slopes (I'll be the one cheering by the small jumps)!
